squares

10 squares down. 54 to go! The weather has turned from glorious and springlike to grey and wet so this afternoon was spent weaving whilst listening to Radio 4 where, amongst other things, I caught a programme about fishing for perch. Yes, a radio programme with two chaps getting excited about fish! I just love the eccentricity of Radio 4. Along with Royal Mail stamps it's one of the best things about Britain.

What is the sett and size of this, and how big will it be? The reds are lovely - my favorite color to weave!

Hi Kathy,
Each square is 4x4cm - sett is 8 epi. (I live my life in an odd mix of metric and imperial!) Overall size will be in or around 32x32cm - a bit less actually as the squares will be overlapping. I think I may have to weave the outermost squares to measure to compensate for any deviation from exact measurements - we'll see.
I'm making it for the RDS competition I mentioned a while ago.

Meabh

me again - spot the deliberate mistake! Can you see the one square which is at 10epi?

The Textile Museum in the US is having an exhibit currently called "RED". Everything in it is red. I haven't seen it, but I'll bet it's stunning. http://www.textilemuseum.org/exhibitions
/current.htm
(I think you'll have to copy and paste the URL, as it won't let me leave a link.)

I can't agree more! I love thinking about all the creative people of Britain tuning in to Radio 4. My husband likes to come home in the evening so I can give him an abstract piece of information that I've heard during the day....for example the names of lichens growing in a graveyard!

Hi Meabh,
I love your blog site and your work. This piece is wonderful. May I ask, is it the sett that helps the overlapping?
Kind regards,
Michelle

Hi Michelle,
Thank you for your comment. The sett refers to the spacing of the warp ends. There are 8 ends (the vertical ones!) per inch. All the squares are woven separately and then mounted onto 2 different thicknesses of foamcore board so that they can overlap.

Hi Meabh,

That is awesome. I love the idea of a flat weave but with dimension. Thanks for your quick reply back.
Talk soon,
